Low-dose Drosera rotundifolia induces gene expression changes in 16HBE human bronchial epithelial cells
Abstract: Drosera rotundifolia has been traditionally used for the treatment of respiratory diseases in phytotherapy and homeopathy. The mechanisms of action recognized so far are linked to the known effects of specific components, such as flavonoids, but are not completely understood. In this study, the biological functions of D. rotundifolia were explored in vitro following the treatment of bronchial epithelial cells, which are the potential targets of the pharmacological effects of the herbal medicine. To do so, the whole plant ethanolic extract was 1000-fold diluted in water (D. rotundifolia 3×) and added to a 16HBE human cell line culture for 3 h or 6 h. The effects on gene expression of the treatments and corresponding controls were then investigated by RNA sequencing. The differentially expressed genes were validated through RT-qPCR, and the enriched biological functions involved in the effects of treatment were investigated. D. rotundifolia 3× did not impair cell viability and was shown to be a stimulant of cell functions by regulating the expression of dozens of genes after 3 h, and the effects were amplified after 6 h of treatment. The main differentially expressed genes encoded ligands of epithelial growth factor receptor, proteins involved in xenobiotic detoxification and cytokines, suggesting that D. rotundifolia 3× could stimulate self-repair systems, which are impaired in airway diseases. Furthermore, D. rotundifolia 3× acts on a complex and multifaceted set of genes and may potentially affect different layers of the bronchial mucosa.
Abstract: We present 2 cases of severe postoperative sore throat, hoarseness, aphonia, and dysphagia, after a laryngeal mask insertion, who were treated successfully with the homeopathic remedy Arnica montana. Three doses of Arnica montana 200CH were given to the patients over 36 hours. Although the symptoms were very intense, the remedy was very effective and cleared most of the symptoms in 48 hours.
Sore throat is a common postoperative complaint. Its incidence, after tracheal intubation, varies from 14.4% to 50%, and after laryngeal mask insertion, it varies from 5.8% to 34%. Hematoma of the left vocal cord is the most common injury that causes this symptom. Symptoms can last from a few hours to no more than 2 days, but in more severe cases, symptoms can last up to many weeks and are resistant to current medical treatment. Arnica montana is a plant belonging to the Compositae family that grows in East and Central Europe. Its anti-inflammatory action is linked to the lactone helenalin, which seems to be involved in the inhibition of the pro-inflammatory transcription factor nuclear factor kappa-beta. Arnica montana is a Homeopathic Remedy primarily indicated when there is an injury that results from a blunt instrument, causing hematoma. Recent research has shown the effectiveness of Arnica montana given in homeopathic potencies in many clinical conditions and also in the gene expression.
We present 2 cases of postoperative sore throat with severe hoarseness and aphonia after minor surgical interventions using the laryngeal mask airway. Both these cases were treated successfully with the use of the homeopathic remedy Arnica montana
Could Homeopathy Become An Alternative Therapy In Dengue Fever? An example Of 10 Case Studies
Abstract: Background:Dengue fever is one of the most rampant epidemics in India of late and any therapy that may help limit the sickness and hospital admissions is worth considering. In India complementary and alternative medicine physicians are medically trained and hence have a role to play in delivery of public health.
Case Series:We present a retrospective case series of 10 Indian patients who were diagnosed with dengue fever and treated exclusively with homeopathic remedies at Bangalore, India.
This case series demonstrates with evidence of laboratory reports that even when the platelets dropped considerably there was good result without resorting to any other means.
Conclusions:A need for further, larger studies is indicated by this evidence, to precisely define the role of homeopathy in treating dengue fever. This study also emphasises the importance of individualised treatment during an epidemic for favourable results with homeopathy.
Abstract: Contemporary medicine is in great need of a new patient health group classification that could be the basis for in-depth pathology assessments, disease development and prognosis, and the possibility of healing, as well as for possible complications of organism reactions to treatment processes. This classification is possible if founded on holistic approaches at the level of health assessment from the point of view of organism reactivity and resistance. Such a classification, assigning 12 levels and 4 health groups, exists in classical homeopathy.
A new method for determining the group and level of health is shown in a case of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis of a generalized form in an 11-year-old girl, treated with classical homeopathy. The follow-up of the case is 18 years.
The method allows the physician to assess the organism dynamics as a whole during the pathology development.
Embryonal Carcinoma with Immature Teratoma: A Homeopathic Case Report
Abstract: Embryonal carcinoma with immature tera-toma is a cancer with a poor prognosis if the expression levels of biological markers are very high. In such a case, after surgical removal of the tumor, homeopathic treatment results in the maintenance of the cancer-free state for over 6 years. Case Report: This is a 3-year-old Indian girl diagnosed with embryonal carcinoma with immature teratoma(after surgery), treated and followed for over 6 years. She was treated on the basis of the principles of classical homeopathy and has stayed free of cancer for 6 years now. Discussion: The cancer marker expression levels dropped while the girl developed severe skin eruptions, which is in accordance with the laws of classical homeopathic treatment in severe pathologies, further confirmatory studies are needed on a larger scale.
Heterotopic ossification in a 7‐year‐old female patient treated with individualized homeopathy: A case report
Abstract: We present a case report of a seven‐year‐old girl suffering from severe congenital heterotopic ossification. The patient received treatment with individualized remedies according to the rules of Classical Homeopathy, demonstrating steady improvement in both her clinical condition and the radiological findings over the next 2 years.
Heterotopic ossification (HO) consists of the formation of bone tissue at extraskeletal anatomical sites at the expense of local tissues, including muscle and connective tissue.1The formation of lamellar bone in soft tissues, where bone normally does not exist, is also called myositis ossificans. However, it would be more accurate to describe the involvement of skeletal muscles as myositis ossificans and the involvement of soft tissues in general as ectopic or heterotopic ossification.2These bony masses can lead to chronic pain, joint ankylosis, pressure ulcers, venous thrombosis, and many other health complications.3
Heterotopic ossification can be acquired, triggered by trauma, surgical procedures, spinal cord and brain injuries, extensive burns or long‐lasting immobilization. Congenital HO is a very rare condition that occurs in pediatric patients and is regarded as an autosomal dominant disease with irregular penetrance leading to ectopic bone formation and motion disturbances.4 Morbidity and early mortality in children is due to respiratory complications and improper treatment of the lesions, with very few cases being cured by surgical intervention.
Individualised Homeopathic Therapy in ANCA Negative Rapidly Progressive Necrotising Crescentic Glomerulonephritis with Severe Renal Insufficiency – A Case Report
Abstract: Anti-Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody (ANCA)-negative Rapidly Progressive Glomerulonephritis (RPGN) is a severe form of autoimmune renal injury with a bleak prognosis.
A 60-year-old Indian woman was treated with classical homeopathy for ANCA-negative RPGN, and after one year of treatment, serum creatinine and other parameters indicating renal injury dropped steadily despite the withdrawal of immunosuppressive drugs; renal dialysis, which was conducted twice a week initially, was made rarer and stopped after one year.
Classical homeopathy may be considered a potential therapeutic modality in severe pathologies. Controlled studies are required to establish further the extent to which classical homeopathy may relieve patients from procedures such as dialysis that cause considerable physical and economic discomfort.
Abstract: We present three cases of cardiac arrest at different stages of pathology. Acute myocardial infarction and resulting heart failure is emerging as the leading cause of mortality. In the long run, acute episodes and cardiac remodelling can cause considerable damage and result in heart failure. In these cases, individualized homeopathic therapy was instituted along with the conventional medicines and the results were encouraging. The changes in the laboratory diagnostic parameters (single-photon emission computed tomography, electrocardiograph, echocardiography and ejection fraction as the case may be) are demonstrated over time. The key result seen in all three cases was the preservation of general well-being while the haemodynamic states also improved. While the three cases provide evidence of positive outcomes for homeopathic therapy, more extensive studies are required in a hospital setting to establish the real extent to which this therapy may be employed.
Abstract: We We present a 61‐year‐old man with severe myasthenia gravis, nonresponsive to conventional therapy. The patient was treated with individualized homeopathy, demonstrating significant improvement on his clinical status and no disease symptoms.
Abstract: Vitiligo, also known as leukoderma, is an autoimmune skin condition that results in the loss of melanin pigment. Vitiligo is not a rare condition but is difficult to treat and is associated with psychological distress.
A series of 14 cases of vitiligo are presented that were treated with individualized homeopathic remedies that were based on plant, animal, or mineral compounds. There were 13 women and one man in the case series, with a mean age 29.8 years, and a mean follow-up from treatment of 58 months. The mean time between the onset of the appearance of vitiligo and the first consultation at our clinic was 96 months. Homeopathic treatment for patients is holistic and was performed on an individualized basis as described in this case series. Photographic images of the skin are presented before and after treatment.
In 14 patients with vitiligo treated with individualized homeopathy, the best results were achieved in the patients who were treated in the early stages of the disease. We believe that homeopathy may be effective in the early stages of vitiligo, but large controlled clinical studies are needed in this area.
Homeopathic treatment for prolonged postoperative coma: a case report
Abstract: Coma is the state of unrousable unconsciousness. There are variations in the degree of coma and the findings and signs found on the patient’s clinical examination depend on the underlying cause of the disorder. The Glasgow Coma scale evaluates the best motor, verbal and eye answers of the patient. A patient is considered to be in a coma if his Glasgow Coma Scale is below 8 points.
The progress that we have made throughout the years has also led to complications that can culminate in a major catastrophe like death, permanent brain damage, coma. A study performed reached the conclusion that prior comorbidity, older age, intraoperative hypotension, and cardiovascular surgery may predispose patients to postoperative coma.
The article presents a case of postoperative coma treated successfully with homeopathy.
Although a rare complication, postoperative coma is a severe, death-leading condition, causing immense suffering on both the patient and the patient’s family. A multidisciplinary and thorough approach is necessary for these patients, but even after a well-conducted therapy, this condition leads to the death of the patient.
Homeopathic Treatment for Postpartum Depression : A Case Report
Abstract: Postpartum psychosis has long-lasting consequences for mother and child. Beside depression, sleep and eating disturbances, exhaustion, social withdrawal, and anxiety, postpartum depression can also interfere with normal maternal-infant bonding and adversely affect child development. Recent reports show that most affected pregnant women are hesitant about taking antidepressant drugs, with a high percentage discontinuing their use. Some authors suggest that the reluctance of pregnant women to take antidepressant drugs should encourage clinicians to discuss with their patients the use of psychological interventions or alternative forms of treatment. In this article, a case of severe postpartum depression, treated successfully with homeopathic therapy, is presented. Considering the high noncompliance of women suffering from postpartum depression with conventional antidepressant medication, research in safe complementary medical methods is justified. One of these methods should be homeopathy.
Individualized Homeopathic Therapy in a Case of Obesity , Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding, and Autonomic Dystonia
Abstract: Obesity is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality globally and challenging to treat because of the multifactorial etiology and presentation. Individualized homeopathy takes into account factors that led to a patient’s health condition and hence may have a role in the treatment of obesity and related co-morbidities; co-morbidities that may arising from the same etiology may respond as a whole to homeopathy treatment.
A 39-year-old Russian female who developed multiple problems after severe emotional stress was treated with individualized classical homeopathic therapy. Obesity, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, and dysautonomia were pathologies that showed improvement.
he response in this patient’s case, supports the need for further investigation on the relevance of individualized homeopathy in these related conditions.
Gangrene: Five case studies of gangrene, preventing amputation through Homoeopathic therapy
Abstract: Gangrene and its associated amputations are clinically challenging, but Homoeopathy offers therapy options. In this case series, 5 cases are presented, in which the homoeopathic treatment prevented amputation of a body part. Homoeopathy stimulates the body's ability to heal through its immune mechanisms; consequently, it achieves wound healing and establishes circulation to the gangrenous part. Instead of focusing on the local phenomena of gangrene pathology, treatment focuses on the general indications of the immune system, stressing the important role of the immune system as a whole. The aim was to show, through case reports, that homoeopathic therapy can treat gangrene without amputing the gangrenous part, and hence has a strong substitution for consideration in treating gangrene.
Fracture treatment with the aid of the homeopathic remedy Symphytum officinale. A report of four cases
Abstract: We present four cases of patients with bone fractures, which were treated with the aid of the Homeopathic Remedy Symphytum officinale. The Remedy was given to the patients after the proper alignment of the bone fragments was secured. Although in the first case the fracture was severely comminuted, and in the third and fourth, the patient’s compliance to the immobilization was very poor, the result of the treatment was excellent, both clinical and radiological.
We present four cases of fractured bones in which, after the alignment of the fractured fragments was established and secured, we used Symphytum officinale in order to speed up the healing process. In all of the cases, initially, the potency used was 30CH, once daily for 10 days, and then 200CH, once a week for the next three weeks. From our knowledge this is only the second report in the English literature describing the use of Homeopathy in the fracture treatment [2].
The article discussed the immanent problems of meta-analyses selecting a number of independent trials in homeopathy, within which, the purpose was to examine the effectiveness of homeopathic treatment. Our focus lied in clarifying that the complex effects of homeopathic treatment known from history and day-to-day practice have not been respected so far.
The examination of most of the homeopathic trials showed that studies rarely account for homeopathic principles, in order to assess the effectiveness of the treatment. The main flaw was that trials reflect the point of view that the treatment with a specific remedy could be administered in a particular disease. However, homeopathy aims to treat the whole person, rather than the diseases and each case has to be treated individually with an individualized remedy. Furthermore, the commonly known events during the course of homeopathic treatment, such as “initial aggravation” and “symptom-shift” were not considered in almost all the studies. Thus, only few trials were eligible for meta-analyses, if at all. These and other factors were discussed and certain homeopathic principles were suggested to be respected in further trials. It is expected, that a better understanding of homeopathic principles would provide guidelines for homeopathic research, which are more acceptable to both homeopathy and conventional medicine.
